Who has not heard of the Vale of Cashmere

Who has not heard of the Vale of Cashmere
With its roses the brightest that earth ever gave
Its temples, and grottoes, and fountains as clear
As the love-lighted eyes that hand over their wave

“Gar Bar-ru-e-Zamin Ast; Hamin Ast, Hamin Ast Hamin Ast.”

It means that if there is paradise on this earth, this is it, this is it and this is it. It is impossible to overstate the beauty of Kashmir.

The breathtaking beauty of Kashmir has earned it the name of the “Switzerland of the East”. The gushing rivers, sparkling waterfalls, scenic surrounding and the lush green forests of Kashmir add to its splendour. Winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir state-Srinagar is famous for its Mughal Gardens, vast hillsides, laded with water scintillating water bodies and flanked with flowering shrubs and trees, laid in formal geometry by the grand Mughal emperors known for their legendary love for Kashmir valley.

Shalimar Gardens are the outstanding among Srinagar’s many gardens and parks. This royal garden was laid out four hundred years ago by the Mughal emperor Jehangir for his wife’s sake. Nishat Bagh on Dal’s edge yet smaller than Shalimar, is more raptly beautiful, dotted with lofty Chinar plane trees.

The gardens of Chashma Shahi laid out by Shah Jahan is another irresistible spot which literally means - a mountain spring that waters it. Gulmarg, rightly called the ’meadow of flowers’ in Kashmir is famed for its golf course, the highest one in the world.

Kashmir (Balti: کشمیر; Dogri: कश्मीर, Poonchi/Chibhali: کشمیر; Kashmiri: कॅशीर, کٔشِیر; Ladakhi: ཀཤམིར; Shina: کشمیر; Uyghur: كھسىمڭر) is the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. Until the mid-19th century, the term "Kashmir" referred only to the valley lying between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal range; since then, it has been used for a larger area that today includes the Indian administerd state of Jammu and Kashmir consisting of the Kashmir valley, Jammu and Ladakh; the Pakistani-administered provinces of the Northern Areas and Azad Kashmir, and the Chinese-administered region of Aksai Chin.

In the first half of the first millennium, Kashmir became an important center of Hinduism and later of Buddhism; later still, in the ninth century, Kashmir Shaivism arose in the region.[1] The heritage of Kashmir during this period is well documented in Rajatarangini by Kalhana. In 1349, Shah Mirza became the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir and inaugurated the line Salatin-i-Kashmir.[2] For the next five centuries Kashmir had Muslim monarchs, including the Mughals, who ruled until 1751, and thereafter, the Afghan Durranis, who ruled until 1820.[2] That year, the Sikhs under Ranjit Singh, annexed Kashmir.[2] In 1846, upon the purchase of the region from the British under the Treaty of Amritsar, the Dogras—under Gulab Singh—became the new rulers. Dogra Rule, under the paramountcy (or tutelage) of the British Crown, lasted until 1947, when the former princely state became a disputed territory, now administered by three countries: India, Pakistan, and the People's Republic of China.

DESCRIPTION

Jammu is the second largest city of the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir and is also its winter capital. Divided into two separate cities, the old town of Jammu is located on a hilltop overlooking the river Tawi while the new town is situated across the river, several kilometers away.

Jammu-- a city of temples, where glittering 'sihkars' adds to the ambience of this holy city. Jammu is located along River Tawi in the foot hills of the Himalayas. Here he saw a tiger and a goat drinking water side by side. It was a place where no one had enmity with other, so he built a city which came to be known as Jammu. Jammu offers the widest diversity of terrain and beauty. The entire region is pocketed with lakes and valleys.JAMMU

Being near the Himalayas, the climate of the entire area is cold though summers are markedly warm. The temperatures range from 26.2'C to 4.3' C in winters and from 43.0'C to 23.4'C during summers. The recommended clothing for winters would be heavy/medium woolens while light cottons would be the best for summers in Jammu. Summers in Jammu are a sweltering, uncomfortable contrast to the cool climes of Kashmir. However, from October onwards, it becomes quite pleasant
